In 2008, David and Alicia asked me to make another video for them, for their song “Building Bridges.” This time, I decided to be more spontaneous.
I arrived in Bloomington-Normal without having done any preparation whatsoever. David, Alicia, and I then drove around town some, brainstorming. Finally we parked in downtown Normal, and I started directing David and Alicia, telling them to kick various things, and jump over various other things. (You can get a sense of what this was like from the outtake included at the end.) We spent the next few hours running around the ISU campus, then downtown Bloomington, shooting until we lost the light.
Later, took all that raw footage and processed it and chopped it up a great deal, resulting in what you see above.
My first video, “No Mind’s Eye,” was released on a Kill Rock Stars DVD, but I think of this as my “true” KRS video (stylistically). And I still really like the editing in this one, especially between 2:00 and 2:30.
It’s my love letter to Bloomington-Normal, my home between 2000 and 2003.
