While I was in Bangkok I bought some kind of discman at MBK (in Siam Square), and it could play mp3 CDs. And I remember once sitting on the ferry between Thon Buri and Tha Chang and I was listening to You Are Free, and “Maybe Not” came on. And that’s when I realized it was one of my favorite songs ever, as well as one of my favorite albums.

When I moved to Bangkok in the spring of 2003, I arrived at my house around 1am, and it was 100 degrees outside, and the street was filled with mangy stray dogs, and the house was filled with cockroaches. And I thought I’d made the biggest mistake in my life. And I went up to my bedroom and turned on the AC and I turned on the TV, and MTV came on, and “Seven Nation Army” was playing. And I thought, “Oh, OK, this might not be so bad.”

It’s gotta be one of the top 10 rock songs of the past ten years, right?

Happily, Jean and David liked “No Mind’s Eye,” and asked if I’d make a video for their longer song “In January.” (A shorter version had appeared on The Family Swan; the extended version was released on their 2003 album Janis Zeppelin.) I agreed, unsure of what I was getting into.
